During World War II, a brave, patriotic American Soldier undergoes experiments to become a new supersoldier, "Captain America." Racing to Germany to sabotage the rockets of Nazi baddie "Red Skull", Captain America winds up frozen until the 1990s. He reawakens to find that the Red Skull has changed identities and is now planning to kidnap the President of the United States.
First of all, who knew that famed reclusive J.D. Salinger even had a son, let alone a B-Movie actor son? That's right, the actor who plays Steve Rogers/Capt. America is Matt Salinger, son of the aforementioned author of "Catcher in the Rye". About the movie though. I wouldn't rate thisa horrible movie, but it sure wasn't good. Salinger did an OK jobthe Cap but his acting prowess wasn't quite good enough to pull off the 50's guy coping with the 90's lifestyle the script called for. And the Red Skull? How do you mess that up?! He's one of the scariest freaking villains in all of comicdom, how could you go wrong? Oh, buy making him a Caucasian Greek mob boss, that's how. I would only recommend this film to die hard fans of the cap or true movie geeks. I happen to be both so I made myself find some good qualities (but it was really, really hard).<br/><br/>As for those of you who share my affinity for comics and bad movies but can't seem to get their hands on this gem, I can only tell you that it's been out of print for more than a decade now and your best bet is to find it at the next comic con in your area or at a flea market that sells bootleg tapes (ditto that for the Fantastic Four movie from '94).
I first found out this was on TV while I was away on vacation so I had my brother tape it for me. He warned me that the film was pretty bad. And well, after seeing it, I liked it the first time, butI watched it again and again, I felt distraught. I was realizing what a bad film this was. The only thing I liked about the film was the costume and the original Red Skull makeup. How can you have Cap be frozen for 45 years only to come backa moron and the Red Skull looking like Jigsaw (one of the main villains in the Punisher comic book). A sad effort.<br/><br/>However, I heard Marvel planning to do something new with Cap. Let it be a better version of a live action film than this and give it the story it deserves to have…heck, add Bucky to the new version. It does better justice than this one.

The movie was directed by Albert Pyun which apparently seemed to have similar consequenceshis most famous movie Cyborg. After differences during the production process, the studio altered the movie quite heavily and the final cut didn't have much in common with Pyun's original version. Furthermore, the scheduled theatrical release was postponed several until the movie was released direct-to video in 1992. <br/><br/>The Director's Cut<br/><br/>…is available on disc 2 of the 3-Disc-Set from Pyun's homepage and it's approx. 14 minutes longer than the regular US-Version. Unfortunately, the end result isn'tspectacularexpected due to its history. There's just a longer block of scenes in the middle of the movie which is a nice charakter development. The new footage proves the stronger focus of Captain America's inner conflict. Besides new footage, some footage has simply been recycledflashback. As already mentioned, it's rather unspectacular and it doesn't look very professional either.<br/><br/>The Commentary Version<br/><br/>AS mentioned before, the Director's Cut (differing from the Original Version) is only available on Pyun's homepage. The customer always receives a 3-Disc-Set whereas the 3rd disc contains a newer production of Pyun's company. Technicalla, the first 2 discs BOTH contain Pyun's favorite version (verifiable due to the alternate beginning and the flashback at the end) but there's still a difference of several minutes which is confusing. But don't worry, the following comparison will shed some light on it.<br/><br/>Disc 1 contains the unedited workprint with a director's commentary track instead of the regular audio track (there's a black screen for 4 minutes at the beginning which contains nothing but Pyun's voice). In this commentary, Pyun mentions his plans to edit this version for a future release on Blu-ray.
